Your Real CV Is What People Say When You're Not in the Room
Roughly 90% of the defining opportunities in my career came from a recommendation. Not a job board. Here's what that actually means for how you do the work.

A few months ago, a company reached out and asked me to recommend someone for a contract role with a multinational. I thought it would be quick. Then I looked at the quality of work the existing team had already shipped, and I paused.
This wasn't a casual recommendation. It was a referral with consequences. Whoever I named would walk in carrying my reputation with them.
That's when it clicked, in a way it hadn't before: my real CV isn't the document I send out. It's the sentence someone says about me when I'm not in the room.
The recommendation engine
If I look back at the meaningful opportunities in my career, almost all of them arrived the same way. Someone I'd worked with mentioned my name to someone they trusted. That's it. Not a job board. Not a recruiter. Not a viral post.
It's not luck. It's the compounding return on doing good work for people who remember.
The implication is uncomfortable, because it means every project, every meeting, every Slack message is part of your CV. The engineer you helped on a tricky bug. The PM you protected from scope creep. The junior you took twenty minutes to unblock when you didn't have to. Each of those people is a node in a network that decides what opportunities reach you in five years.
What this changes
Three habits I've doubled down on since I started taking this seriously:
Show up when you said you would. Reliability is the cheapest competitive advantage in software. Most people are not reliable. Be reliable for ten years and you accidentally become unusual.
Tell the truth when something is breaking. Early, in writing, with a plan. People don't remember every project that went smoothly. They remember the moment something went wrong and how you handled it.
Make other people look good. Pass on credit when it's not yours. Pass on opportunities when they're a better fit. The instinct to hoard either of those things looks rational in the short term and costs you for years.
The other side of it
There's a flip to all of this that's worth saying out loud: be careful whose name you attach to your own. A recommendation is a transfer of trust. If the person you vouch for under-delivers, the cost lands on you.
So the discipline cuts both ways. You build a reputation by doing good work. You protect it by being honest about who else is doing good work. That's the whole game.
The single sentence
If I had to compress this into one rule, it would be:
Do the kind of work that people quietly want to be associated with.
Then keep doing it. Long after the project that earns you the next opportunity is finished, the sentence about you will be travelling through rooms you'll never see. Make sure it's a sentence you'd be proud of.
